Get ready for the 7th of December Bazaar

This link is from the freeze flash mob in Nicosia that unfortunately I didn't know about at the time. It's great! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfE2xD--fOo

Christina Lazarou sent this interesting video as well:

On the 7th of december, 2008 the traditional fund raising bazaar near Kala Kathoumeva will take place (it satrts around 11 a.m.). AWAKE will have a stand, selling edible goodies (for charity) that we've prepared and giving out leaflets and collecting signatures as well. Whoever wants to participate can bake something and bring it and help out at the stand.

Thanks

flash mob

This is from Maria. Interesting...

Have a look at this flash mob in the central train station in new york. It's great!

A flash mob is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse.

Minutes 20/11/08

We signed the constitution!! A historical day for Awake!

Pola was voted president (she’s the boss)
Efthymia Alfa - vice president (she’ll assist and help the president)
Lara Alfa- treasurer (the money person)
Maria Costi – secretary (writes the diary: “dear diary….”)

Things that were said on Thursday 20-11-08:

-from the moment we become an NGO we’ll have to be serious on keeping the books updated, and the expenses written down etc.
-The committee will be meeting more often now, and will discuss different issues and how to proceed. They’ll meet with the people in the municipality etc, and only if it is necessary will there be held a meeting, i.e. if we all have to vote or decide on something.
-It was commented that these four-five people will have a lot more weight on their shoulders and a lot more work to do, but we could also vote for a new committee every year or earlier if one of the members can’t continue.
-we agreed that AWAKE won’t fight specific neighborhood issues but general problems that are the same for many neighborhoods i.e. noise, clubs, cars, traffic, parking, and garbage etc. Those who have specific problems will first try to address them personally, and in case of difficulties will bring the subject up in AWAKE’s meetings to see what can be done.
-A possible event right after Christmas?

Hope all’s clear.
See you soon
Maria Costi

Παρασκευή 30 Μαΐου 2008

I was guest on Radio Astra this morning and spoke about our group "Awake". Received a few phone calls, some residents who want to help, join the group etc. I think it was quite an interesting discussion. We are moving forward to become an NGO.

Some reflections before the meeting

-We would like to point some thoughts before the meeting in Melina Mercury:

1) The invitations are quickly made, provisional, and plotted in a standard printer. Only in Greek. After the exhibition of Awake!, it looks like they decide, fast and careless, make up a meeting.

2) Probably, too many people will be there, and everyone with something to say. The last experience in Takt-el-Kale was chaotic, and only a small area of the Old City was represented there.

3) Is quite good that everyone can speak on their behalf, but is not possible to give word to too many people. (Just some numbers: question + answer at least 5 – 10 minutes. How long will the meeting go?)

4) We’ll see what happens today, but we think this is not the best way of communication between people and municipality: reliable regular meetings, with few representatives of groups or areas are necessary to be able to work and discuss about the problems of the City.

-We also hope this idea is not just one gesture for the newspapers and press only. We appreciate the initiative, but may be this is not the best way to walk together to find solutions.

Invitation to dialoge

Nicosia Municipality

The Mayor of Lefkosia Eleni Mavrou and the members of the Municipality Council of Lefkosia invite you to the Municipal Gathering of the City Inside the Wall , in the "Melina Merkouri" Hall, on Friday 23 May 2008, at 7.30 p.m.

In the Municipal Gathering every area or every citizen of a municipality has word, and can present his opinion. Our goal is to begin a municipal dialog and a two-directional communication to activate the citizens and to cover the most important discussions that concern us all.

Success!

The exhibition was really a success! We wanted to show the "faces" of the city. Pictures of people living in The Old City and showing their everyday feelings about the situation, talking about the good and bad of the city.
Also, there was photographic and sound material showing life today in the Old Town, under the title Places and Faces Within the Walls of Nicosia.

Lots of people passed by the stoa to check the Awake! presentation, between them, the major K. Mavrou, some of the municipal authorities, and lots of friends of the old city.
Also, students from Phaneromeny school could learn about the city they live in.
Thanks to all of you!

We want this for Nicosia!

This one comes from Pola:

FREE CHARGING

On a recent vacation in London, Cars.com producer Martin Stocks stumbled across the Recharging Points for electric vehicles you see here. About 20 such stations heve been instaled around central London to allow owners of electric vehicles to recharge their cars while at work or shopping. Here's what Martin had to say about the phenomenon:

“Despite the lack of available vehicles, those who choose to be an early adopter can potentially save a lot of money. The Charging Stations are free to use, and vehicles that use them also park for free. Parking in central London can be up to $50 a day. In addition, electric vehicles are exempt from London 's $16-per-day congestion charge. So that's $66 per day saved before we even factor in gas at $7 a gallon. You don't even take a hit on your electricity bill if you do all your charging in the city."

The rivers of Nicosia

Who said there are no rivers in Nicosia?

You only need not to have sewer system, horrible pavement, lots of cars and a Municipality who doesn’t care.

Lots of fun! You can even have your own swimming pool inside your house!
Do it yourself!

Palmanova

The twin city of Nicosia.
